The performance of
Magnetic Media can often be improved by cleaning the tape before and
between uses. The objective of cleaning is to remove as much debris
as possible from both the back and front surfaces of the tape which could
lead to clogging of magnetic heads and problems associated with
contaminated tape paths.

Tape Certifying

Certification of new
Magnetic Tape is essential for reliable data integrity and consists of
evaluation of the media prior to use. Metrum’s continuing analysis of
certification results for new magnetic media shows a consistent 10%
failure rate in electrical performance, which is unacceptable to many
users where reliable data storage is essential. To overcome this problem
of COTS failure / yield rates Metrum now offers a certification capability
for all its AIT and S-AIT customers, thus ensuring the highest level of
data integrity possible.
Metrum's certification
process identifies any physical deformities in tape manufacture by either
optical or electrical tests. The use of dropout analysis equipment also
provides details of the media's electrical performance.
For users of other types
of Magnetic Media, Metrum can certify the majority of standard tape widths
and physical formats.

Tape Recovery

Damage to tape can occur
in many different ways. Simple ageing of media can induce effects such as
shedding of the oxide layer which obviously is detrimental to both the
recovery of data and the equipment on which the tape is being replayed.
In order to overcome this
problem, Metrum provides a stabilisation service that will allow a
deteriorated tape to be replayed a limited number of times, allowing
transcription to a different media.
Physical damage to tape,
for example media recovered from aircraft crash recorders, can often be
reconstituted to a level that will allow replay and acquisition of the
data contained on the tape. Metrum is able to provide expert advice
and facilities in this area, and has been called upon to do so by
investigative teams on numerous occasions.
